A Journey into the Soul of Your Dog’s Emotions

A Journey into the Soul of Your Dog’s Emotions

Read a Sample

Dog owners and professionals alike tend to address only the barking, aggression, or fearful avoidance. But these behaviors are only the symptoms, not the root cause.

Every action stems from a rich and often overlooked emotional reality, influenced by genetics, learned experiences, and environmental cues. Effective intervention requires us to explore and address this deeper emotional state.

Dogs experience joy, fear, frustration, anxiety, excitement, sadness, and more - emotions they feel with an honesty we often miss. Their body language, expressions, and vocalisations are constantly communicating their inner state.

• A wagging tail isn't always happiness.
• A yawn isn't always tiredness.
• Their barks have different meanings.
• "Ignoring" your cues may mean they're overwhelmed.

Emotion always comes before behaviour. High emotions impair clear thinking, making learning and impulse control near impossible. Addressing the emotional root and not just suppressing the behaviour we see, creates lasting change.

This beautiful, easy-to-read book explores canine emotions in depth: how they develop, influence behaviour (from reactivity and guarding to over-excitement), and connect to everyday challenges like anxiety, separation distress, or fear.

It goes beyond problems, offering guidance on building calm, resilience, trust, and stronger bonds through understanding, supported by the latest scientific research and my real-world methods with clients.

When we see dogs emotionally, we respond with patience and empathy. Behaviour becomes calm, not a battle. Dogs feel supported, grow confidence, and cope better.

An invitation to deeper understanding, empathy, and connection - for anyone seeking a calmer, happier dog and an unbreakable bond, no matter the challenges.

Finally understand your dog. Restore harmony, resolve issues, and deepen your bond - the book every owner wishes they'd found sooner!

a very informative and constructive read

What a wonderful book, full of advice and information about dog behaviour. We run a rescue centre here and although we have years of experience of difficult dogs, I now have some really good information to refer to. Dogs are very complex animals, full of emotion, that deserve the people around them to read the signs correctly and do the right thing for them, this book helps so much to guide you in the right direction.

Together we can help your dog to behave.

Resolving Complex Behavioural Challenges, Wherever You Are.

When we share our homes with dogs, it's natural to zero in on the obvious signs: the relentless barking, the warning growls, the pulling like a train, or the worrying signs of stress and anxiety.

Yet these are only the visible echoes of something much deeper.

Every behavior springs from a vibrant emotional landscape, molded by innate instincts, past experiences, and the surroundings they navigate daily. Lasting transformation for a dog in turmoil begins when we tune into the hidden world of their emotions.

This is where real understanding begins!

Through connection, observation, patience and compassionate guidance, these dogs and their guardians have made meaningful changes.

From Fearful to Confident

A rescue dog now explores new experiences with curiosity and calm. (See the videos of Smarties, on the yellow retractable lead, bright blue harness. He changes his behaviour before your eyes, and when he feels safe, he joins in.)

From Reactive to Relaxed

Max, a dog that lunged and barked at people and dogs now enjoys walks with ease. (See the GSD video near the end)

From Withdrawn to Engaged

Merlot, a dog who once hid and cowered with worry now seeks connection and play. (See the videos "I Wanted to Eat the Spaniel but Uncle Rob helped!")

From Wanting to Kill the Puppy to Calm Friendship

Poppy, an older dog, with one eye, was fearful and reactive now enjoys peace and companionship. (See the videos 'I want to eat that puppy')

These stories show that true progress comes when we understand and support the emotions behind behaviour.

Roy's Story
A Journey of Trust and Transformation

"That dog is dangerous!
…it needs to be euthanised."

— Recommendation from previous trainer and vet

Roy, a young Belgian Malinois, arrived with a troubled history. He was highly reactive to both people and dogs, often redirecting his frustration onto his owner through biting incidents. Despite more than a year working with a trainer who relied heavily on using an e-collar (and who was bitten nearly every week), the situation seemed hopeless. Behavioural euthanasia was recommended, and the vet agreed.

His owners, Aleks and her father, refused to give up. They asked if I would take Roy and give him one final chance.

In a calm, structured environment centred on meeting his core needs through play, mental stimulation, and careful social guidance, Roy began to change rapidly, we had built a relationship based on trust, through play and confidence building routines. By day three, he was already relaxing around my dogs and working confidently alongside the livestock.

Just two weeks later, he walked calmly through town, completely neutral towards passing dogs and people. He even joyfully played with a Golden Retriever that bounded over unexpectedly.

When his owners came to collect him, they were astonished. The relaxed, happy dog greeting them seemed a world away from the one they had brought to me.

The problem was never the dog.

Roy is a powerful, athletic, and resilient Belgian Malinois, selectively bred to push through difficult challenges and ignore pain or discomfort. When faced with punishment-based tools such as e-collars or prong collars (often used to enforce strict control), Roy did not submit. Instead, he resisted. He fought back and redirected his frustration onto those closest to him.

This breed was designed to thrive in true partnership, to collaborate, connect, and co-exist as part of a trusted team.
Trust and understanding were the answers all along.

Today, Roy and his owners share a deep, calm connection built on mutual trust and understanding.
Walks are relaxed and enjoyable, play is joyful and free, and home life is peaceful.

Aleks describes it simply: “He’s no longer stressed or on guard – he’s happy, and so are we.
We finally feel like a real family.”

Harmony was restored.

“Rob knew instantly how to help my dog. After just one week, Roy was a completely different dog—reactivity dramatically reduced. I can now walk him off-lead without fear. Rob kept me updated daily with videos and still offers ongoing support. He clearly understands each dog’s individual needs.”
— Aleksandra Volkova (Roy’s owner)

Anna with Violet, Poppy & Rose
Anna Richardson Puppy Violet

Poppy is reactive towards dogs & immediately attacked the new puppy, with a little help the re-introduction went very well!

"Rob is amazing! Knowledgeable, dedicated, passionate! He knows everything about dogs, he loves them and cares for the dogs and families. Dogs are his genuine passion, not just a job. He is supportive, approachable and generous with his time and advice. I had a big problem with introduction of puppy dachshund to my 2 older dogs and he spotted the underlying issues immediately, wrote us a plan and fixed the whole situation in less than 2 weeks.
Thank you Rob!!!"

Rosy Haynes & Ace
Ace the dog

"Rob’s help and advice has been invaluable. My current rescue collie Ace is extremely wary of people, and came to me as a bite risk - this is combined with lack of socialisation/social skills with other dogs. After messages and several in depth discussions. I took Ace to meet Rob in person and we had a really productive time - it was fascinating to watch how Rob by incremental steps worked with Ace to gain his trust so that by the end of the day he was handling Ace, walking and interacting with him on and off lead even putting him back in the car himself with no involvement from me. At the finish Ace was confident with Rob, even showing affection (amazing)! We also introduced Ace to one of Rob’s dogs and I came away much more confident about new dog interactions for Ace and about reading his body language - plus more idea of the correct way to introduce new people to him too. Rob on the phone and in person didn’t rush and was very generous with his time in order to answer questions fully and take his time with Ace. The follow up report with notes and his opinion on Ace was very useful too. If you are struggling with a sharp or reactive dog I would say contact Rob he will help you. Rosy and Ace"

Jerry Watts - Highly Recommended!

I recently had the pleasure of working with an outstanding dog psychologist who truly exceeded my expectations. From the moment he arrived at my home, it was clear that he was not just knowledgeable but genuinely passionate about helping both dogs and their owners. He took the time to assess my situation in detail, carefully observing my dog’s behaviour and listening to my concerns. His personalised approach made all the difference, as he tailored his recommendations specifically to my dog's needs. It was evident that he really cares about the well-being of animals, and his insights were both practical and effective. What impressed me the most was his ability to connect with my dog, creating a comfortable environment that allowed for open communication. His expertise and understanding helped us take significant steps toward improving our situation. I highly recommend this incredible man to anyone seeking help with their dog. His dedication, professionalism, and compassionate approach make him a standout in the field! Rob, we thank you for everything!

Sam Robson

We worked with Rob for a few months to help with our dogs reactivity and the progress we made is truly incredible. Our dog has gone from being reactive with almost every bicycle and dog to now being able to disengage and make plenty of play friends - something we were starting to have doubts would ever happen. Through Rob’s structured plans and guidance, he has helped us further understand our furry friend and provide the right balance of enrichment, training and release to satisfy all our needs. It’s clear from day one that Rob truly cares and has a passion for what he does as well as the knowledge and experience to help drive positive behaviour change. We enjoy working with Rob and would definitely recommend to anyone considering.

Jo Constable

I reached out to Rob for advice about a new rescue dog I had, he sent me loads of resources and spent a long time really trying to understand the cause of the dogs issues and give me reassurance. When I called Rob a few hours later in a crisis he was willing to drop everything immediately and help me and my dog. Such a genuine and committed person that I would (and have) recommend to everyone who needs help with their dog.
